Living in Space Traveling Exhibit Opens at the Explorium
Explorium of Lexington is opening a brand-new traveling exhibit, Living in Space, October 3, 2009 – January 23, 2010. The exhibit premiers with a member preview party on October 2. This hands-on, interactive exhibit is on display in Lexington while traveling from other children’s museums throughout the United States and Canada. Living in Space is inspired by the International Space Station (ISS) – the single largest international aerospace project ever undertaken by humankind.
Living in Space allows visitors to become ISS crewmembers for a day as they engage in a multitude of astronaut activities. This unique environment is the basis for a fascinating immersion experience; a window into a day in the life of an ISS crewmember. Stories and videos from real ISS crewmembers are also presented.
The new exhibit resembles the look and feel of the actual ISS. The entry portal communicates a typical day aboard the ISS and includes interesting facts about living onboard. Visitors also use this area to make choices about what to include in their planned day in space. The exhibit is then divided into three distinct parts. "Living in Space" shows visitors how different it is to live in space, including food, sleep and hygiene. "Working in Space" concentrates on crewmembers’ actual work in space such as building and maintaining the ISS, using the special equipment onboard, docking with the Space Shuttle and more. "Playing in Space" shows that living in space is not just all work and no play as astronauts need a break from their busy schedules when they are orbiting Earth.
"Living in Space" includes eat and sleep in space. "Working in Space" includes seven areas: meet the shuttle, a model for cooperation, Canadarm2, fit for space, floating to work, dress for space and science in space. "Play in Space" includes two areas: packed with fun and weightless wonders.
Explorium Opens Children's Art Gallery
A new gallery gallery to display children's art was officially opened on April 25, during the Kid at HeART benefit event. The proceeds of the event support the the Explorium's Art Outreach Program. The new gallery, located in the former What's New 2 room, will display art from elementary, middle and high school students from various schools in the region.
The opening exhibit, Model City, was presented compliments of the Art Outreach Program and Harrison Elementary School. 32 Examples of Digital Art, by students in the Student Technology Leadership Program, opens May 22 and will remain on exhibit through June 19. The exhibit consists of original digital art, photography, manipulated photography and graphic design.
Passport to the World Exhibit Open
The Explorium announced it will unveil a new interactive world culture wall map, Passport to the World, to the public on March 27, 2009.
The projected image map, 7 feet by 9 feet in size, allows visitors to explore countries and cultures by the simple click of a track ball. Each location highlighted on the map has a corresponding video segment featuring a student native to the particular country.
The exhibit is made possible through a grant from the Kentucky Colonels with additional funding from Best Buy and completed in collaboration with the University of Kentucky's Department of Visualization and Office of International Affairs. The exhibit will be part of the permanent collection of discovery zones available to visitors and will be included in the regular admission price.
